General anesthesia is used to perform abdominoplasty, and the surgery may take several hours based on the magnitude of the problem vis-à-vis how loose the tissue is and how much the stretched-out muscles need to be tightened. That, in turn, dictates the degree to which excess skin and fat must be removed. Hence, the surgery may take as little as two hours or as much as five hours. Pain medication will be prescribed to eliminate any discomfort after surgery, and the procedure may require up to 4 weeks of recuperation wearing a support garment. Any scarring will fade in 9 to 12 months, and for best long-term results, abdominoplasty patients should adhere to a healthy lifestyle to prevent the abdominal wall from again becoming lax and fatty.
