Facelift

Turn back the hands of time.

Overview

Facelift Surgery

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure performed to give the face and neck a tighter, smoother, and more youthful appearance. The procedure involves the tightening of muscles and connective tissue in the face and neck, coupled with the removal of excess skin and subcutaneous fat deposits. A facelift helps reverse the effects of aging, which causes a loss of bone and skin elasticity. The procedure lifts and tightens the skin around bone and muscle to restore facial contour, smoothing folds and wrinkles in the area of the mid-face, lower face, jawline, and neck.

Benefits

  • Firmer, tighter face and neck skin
  • More youthful overall appearance
  • Elimination of deep nasolabial folds
  • Elimination of marionette lines from mouth to chin
  • Elimination of mid-face fine lines and wrinkles
  • Tightening of jawline
  • More defined facial contours
  • Improved self-confidence

Facelift Surgery Treatment Plan

Your facelift will be performed under general anesthesia administered by a board certified anesthesiologist. The surgery will take place in a fully-equipped, outpatient hospital facility by a board certified plastic surgeon. Your surgeon will customize his incisions based on the complexity of the procedure, but typically they run from the temple, around the ear, and back into the hair behind the ear. The procedure involves tightening the overlying skin as well as the underlying muscle to achieve a more sculpted result, and after excess skin is removed, the incisions are closed. This surgical procedure usually takes from 2-3 hours, after which the incisions will be taped and the head may be wrapped to reduce swelling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a facelift?

It is a surgical procedure performed to lift the cheeks and soften nasolabial folds while tightening jowls and uplifting the neck to eliminate the appearance of sagging and neck bands.

Does a facelift improve skin tone, texture and sun damage?

No. For this, you should enhance the results of your surgery with fractional skin resurfacing, mictrodermabrasion, chemical peels or a variety of other non-surgical procedures.

Who is the best candidate for a facelift?

Because this is an invasive procedure, the best candidate is a patient who is young enough to still have the skin elasticity that allows retraction. Additionally, the best results are seen in patients who do not smoke, drink only in moderation, consume a healthy diet, and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.

Is the procedure painful?

During the procedure, you will feel no pain, and after the procedure, most patients report only mild discomfort. Every individual has a different threshold to pain, and your surgeon will prescribe appropriate pain medication to alleviate any discomfort.

After a facelift, how soon can I go back to work?

Typically, patients return to work after two weeks.

How soon will I be able to resume my regular exercise regimen.

Typically, exercise can be resumed after three weeks.

Facelift Surgery

If the effects of age, gravity, genetics, and sun exposure now leave you barely able to recognize yourself in the mirror, it may be time to consider a facelift. Over the years, loss of tone takes its toll on cheeks, chin and neck, giving rise to jowls, a wattled neck, double chin, and deep furrows from nose to mouth. Facelift surgery (rhytidectomy) is the most effective way to turn back the hands of time up to 10 years or more. The procedure involves the tightening of muscles and connective tissue in the face and neck, coupled with the removal of excess skin and subcutaneous fat deposits.

Results:

Depending upon your appearance and objectives prior to surgery, your post-op results may range from subtle to dramatic. In other words, to friends and associates you may simply have a refreshed and rejuvenated look attributable to rest, relaxation, weight loss, and the elimination of stress. Or the difference may be profound, making you look light-years younger and more vibrant than your former self. For added enhancement, facelifts are often combined with other procedures, such as brow lifts, eyelid or nose surgery, and liposuction.

Recovery After a Facelift Surgery:

Your facelift will be performed in a fully-equipped outpatient facility. Based on the extent of your surgery, all sutures will be removed within 7 – 10 days.During this time, you should not strain, stretch, lift, twist or exert yourself. It may take several weeks for the swelling to disappear, at which time your results will become beautifully apparent.
